Metro Scholars is a New Jersey based non-profit organization dedicated to boosting educational opportunities and enhancing the development of youth from low-income neighborhoods across the NJ/NY public school area. We believe education does not end at 3pm, nor does it come only from curriculums taught in the classroom. Metro Scholars invests in students by providing resources and hands-on experiences for the betterment of the next generation.

An Academic Impact:

A study shared by the National Education Association, found that, “regardless of gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, youth who take educational trips have better grades (59 percent), higher graduation rates from high school (95%) and college (63%), and greater income (12% higher annually). In fact, 89% said educational trips had a positive, lasting impact on their education and career because the trips made them more engaged, intellectually curious and interested in and out of school.”

Reinforced Cultural Growth and Personal Development

“Students who, by lottery, were selected to visit a museum on a field trip demonstrated stronger critical thinking skills, displayed higher levels of social tolerance, exhibited greater historical empathy and developed a taste for art museums and cultural institutions.”

Promotes Hands-On Learning

Lessons can be presented in different modalities, with instructors not restricted to the confines of textbooks and digital media.

The Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching points to the reality that “experience is the best teacher.” Learning outside of the classroom is therefore an active process where students make sense of the world, and must engage using multiple modalities.

By The Numbers:

An average school bus fits 30 students. The cost per student to attend an average field trip is $15.
